My first shot of Comet Ikeya-Zhang was in black and white, taken from my backyard in Newport Beach on March 3, 2002. I was thrilled that the Orange County Register thought enough of it to print it - this was my first astronomical image published! The reproduction wasn't great, but it made the cover of the local section. The actual image is shown below.

I was later able to get a color image from the desert when it got higher in the sky on April 14. Both images were tracked on the head of the comet, so the stars trail in a line. In the color image you can see the various filters used by the way the stars rainbow - black and white images taken through clear, red, green, and blue filters are combined to make a color image.
